CD of the week # 6 – Bob Marley – Legend

2007 February 9

I had planned to do this earlier in the week, honoring Bob Marley on what would have been his birthday. I always remember Marley’s birthday because February sixth is also my sister’s birthday. Feb. 6th was Ronald Reagan’s birthday too (but Reagan was shot on my birthday in 1981).

Anyway, this is a real cop-out but the CD of the week is pretty much anything by Bob Marley. You really just can’t go wrong with Marley.

Legend is a good place to start, though. It’s Marley’s posthumous greatest hits compilation and is the best selling reggae album ever.

Legend

Here’s Bob singing one of the greatest songs ever written, in my opinion, Redemption Song:

Redemption Song originally appeared on Marley’s final studio album, Uprising and is also on Legend. The sheer number, not to mention diversity, of artists who have covered Redemption Song speaks volumes about the song’s popularity and impact.

One final note: Bob Marley was well known as an adherant of the Rastafari religion but a few months before his death, he was baptized into the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
