Why I Dig Jesus
David tagged me over a week ago to share five things that I “dig” about Jesus. David probably thinks I forgot. Sorry it’s taken so long… I actually put quite a bit of thought into this one…

Jesus had a cool look going on…. you know, long hair, beard, robe, sandals… O.K., I’m joking. We don’t know what Jesus really looked like but I’m pretty sure he didn’t look like Warner Sallman’s famous painting (above). I doubt he looked much like most other well-known depictions either. And while some have tried to approach the subject of Jesus’ appearance from a more common-sense point of view, the fact remains that we do not know what he really looked like. And I think that is so fortunate because Jesus was and is for everyone. If we had an accurate portrait of Jesus, it might cause those who don’t look much like him to feel that he wasn’t for them. Jesus offers God’s love to each and every person regardless of their appearance, race, nationality, circumstances of birth or any other thing you can think of to say about a person… Now that, I dig!
Jesus challenged the powerful and privileged. But he didn’t do it for his own benefit. Jesus challenged the civil government, social conventions, the religious authorities as well as conventional wisdom with no benefit to himself. In fact he fought the law and the law won in the worst possible way. Jesus was arrested, tortured, tried, and executed. Conventional wisdom says, “end of story!” Conventional wisdom is only sometimes conventional but is almost always not wisdom – fortunately. Whether you are are one who believes that Jesus rose from the grave metaphorically or literally, it was the ultimate victory. It was a victory of massive proportions not only because he overcame the seemingly ultimate defeat (death) but that, in that overcoming of defeat, he empowered others. And that is a legacy that has reverberated down though the ages…
Jesus had a bit of a temper. For a guy known as the Prince of Peace, Jesus wasn’t above getting in someone’s face if the situation called for it. Call it righteous indignation if you want. Remember when he turned over the money table in the temple? He called the religious leaders ‘hypocrites’ and ‘vipers’ to their faces. He occasionally had some harsh words for his friends and followers when they failed him. He even mocked the one man who could have set him free. It’s strange, I suppose, for one like myself who is so meek and mild, but for some reason, I really dig that side of Jesus…
Jesus’ message was disturbing. And is disturbing. I mean that in the best possible way. Jesus’ message was upsetting to those who heard it first hand. It so disturbed the authorities that it led to his execution. It confused and bewildered others, but it has always been difficult to ignore. The message was also so disturbingly powerful to some that they immediately gave up their livelihoods to follow this poor itinerant preacher. And his message continues to disturb folks in the same ways. Disturbing can be good. I think people need to be disturbed.
Jesus spoke for those who had no voice. Jesus loved the unlovable; he had a soft spot for children; he invited women to share in his life and ministry and he hung out with outcasts, sinners and social misfits. The thing that all these folks have in common is that, at the time, they were virtually shut out of society. They had no voice and no one to speak for them. Women and children were little more than property of men back then and those who had done things which made them ‘unclean’ or were regarded as ’sinners’ had no hope of redeeming themselves. But God could give them hope because God can redeem the seemingly unredeemable. Jesus lived this out by forgiving their sins interacting with them normally no matter their shortfalls in the eyes of proper society. I seriously dig that.
That’s my 5… to start with. I’m supposed to tag five others by leaving a link in their comments. Y’all know how I feel about this. If anyone reading this found it interesting, you are tagged!

Nice post. God bless you.
Cool insights Art.
Hiya Art…although I am not a christian I’ve enjoyed this post about Him
Thank you!
art,
hugsssssssssssssssssss
I loved your answers, thank you. The picture you posted has always been my favorite one of Him. I have one hanging in my home.
I love Jesus’ bad ass anger too. Swami Satchidananda used to say keep anger in your back pocket. Don’t BE angry, but pull it out and ACT angry when those who must listen do not.
Methinks its a powerful force.
Cool article on the face of Jesus btw.
xx
pinks
PS – how you feeling? Hows the sinuses?
xx
Great reasons, Art. I can tell you’ve put a little thought into this.
I’ve been reading lots of this “tag” on various blogs, and I don’t believe I could come up with anything different or “better,”, so I won’t be posting my own…sorry. It’s the weekend! I don’t wanna think!
Hope you’re feeling better. Enjoy your weekend!
I think they’re great reasons.
I’ve been tagged by Little David and Proclaiming – I think more than a week ago so I will get around to it. Although I like Vicki’s “solution”.
Hmmmm.
I thought I hit “submit comment” but it didn’t appear.
I’ll try again.
Great reasons.
I’ve been tagged twice but have yet to do my post although I like Vicki’s “solution’ too.
Great reasons. I am going out on a limb here and commenting my feelings(yes this is the disclaimer part lol). Please understand that they are MY feelings and I am in no way saying that I am right and you are wrong… Its more that I just dont understand or just cant except the answers I have been given.
I dont have an issue with Jesus (he seems like he was an amazing guy!!! lol ) as much as organized religion that claims to follow Jesus… Claims to interpret him and his actions…
You wrote, “Jesus offers God’s love to each and every person regardless of their appearance, race, nationality, circumstances of birth or any other thing you can think of to say about a person…” then I have to believe that he died on the cross for my sins or I go to hell? Prisoners who have murdered and raped, but ‘find Jesus’ will go to Heaven, but I will not… Ghandi will not? Those who believe in the Tripitaka or Prajna Paramita will not? I just dont get that… I just cant believe that Jesus would agree with that.
There is a woman who I link on my log who was an unwed mother… she was shun from her church and not allowed to Christen her child… yet, you wrote, ” Jesus loved the unlovable; he had a soft spot for children; ” Why is it that an unwed mother cant Christen her chlid in achurch then? How can it be? I dont have the specifics, but she actually posted about it about 2 months ago…
My Grandfather wasnt going to be allowed to be burried in the Catholic Church Cemetary because he didnt go to church regularly (not because he was an alcoholic and terrible husband and father… lol) My Grandmother(a multiple day a week church goer) basically bought him a place there… the money talked… and they now lie together there…
I think that organized religion brings hope, peace and comfort to many. My Maternial Grandparents were Catholic and my Husband (nonpracticing) and his family are all Catholic. His parents are very active in the church and when his Dad died 2 years ago, religion brought his Mom much comfort. I could go on for hours on this topic. Its like sex and politics… there is a neverending supply of interesting things to discuss!
Gosh I hope that I didnt overstep my comment boundaries… and if I did, feel free to not publish this. I will not be upset. Thanks Art!
No,I didn’t think that you forgot, but I am glad that you posted your answers which by the way are some very good ones. This has been one meme that has spread quckly and many folks seem to give it plenty of thought before posting. Thanks Art.
Love this! I think I love the Jesus hung out with the “onpopular” people most of all. I’m always telling my husband, “He didn’t come here for the well people…he came here for the sick people.”
He hung out with the people no body even wanted to be around..have anything to do with. the people who were outcasts and lonely and needed Him most of all. I love that. Plus, He can be judgemental but in a GOOD way…he’s never harsh until you absolutely NEED Him to be…..
He’s everything to me and why i can stand here today….simple as that.
Great thought you put into this. Thanks for sharing!
I was tag too and I will write about Jezus soon. Thank you for this great post. Very interesting and informative.
Why I dig Jesus -
“The Lord is with me. I will not be afraid. What can mere men do to me?” – Psalms 118:6
Jesus was total punk man! What’s not to dig?
That was a cool post.
To me the coolest thing about Jesus was that he was one of the original punk upstarts.
Maybe it’s because I was born in the mid-sixties and right before the hippie movement caused a big fuss, but I always picture him sorta like that.
I am not very religious, and in fact often question organized religion. But I consider myself a spiritual person and to me, that’s the real message Jesus had—-find your spirit, and then give it away.
Oh, and I doubt very much he was a blonde blue-eyed dude. Just a guess.
Thank you all for the comments. Wow, what a range of responses
And thanks for the inquiries into my health. It appears that it was “only” an allergy attack, though a very bad one. I’m feeling much better now…
Great answers, Art. Today I answered this same meme and after reading your contribution, I wish I hadn’t tagged other people. But I didn’t want to break the chain… Answering memes is time consuming and if you have no lack of inspiration, you really don’t need them. But… I did like your answers and of course you wouldn’t have written this without being invited to do so. So, I am happy that somebody had the courage to tag you. I dig that. Feel free to check out my answers if you want to compare them with yours (I did answer first before reading the post from my fellow bloggers across the globe!) Blessings
Thanks Paul. I will.
I dig Jesus too. Thank you for your comments. No matter what he looked like,he was beautiful on the inside.
