Strange News – The Man Who Fell From The Sky

How can a serious brain injury, a broken back, crushed chest and pelvis, ruptured abdomen, a broken right arm and two broken legs be considered good luck? When compared to the alternative. Alcides Moreno, who suffered these horrific injuries, was more fortunate than his brother, Edgar. The window washing brothers fell from a 47 story platform on December 7th of last year. Edgar was pronounced dead at the scene but Alcides was semi-conscious when rescue workers arrived.

The surviving Moreno brother was given 24 pints of blood, 19 pints of plasma and underwent emergency abdominal surgery. He spent most of December undergoing a series of orthopedic operations to stabilize his spine, pelvis, chest and legs.

But a more immediate concern had been his recovery at all. Alcides Moreno, who had been unresponsive since the day of the accident, regained consciousness on Christmas day (though he mistook a nurse for his wife, Rosario).

Experts say that the chances of surviving a 500 plus feet fall onto pavement is infinitesimally small. A three story tumble is often fatal.

Doctors predict a full and functional recovery for Elcides but it may be a year before he is able to walk again. When that happens, Moreno says he plans to return to his old job, washing the windows of skyscrapers.

    Yikes! One fall of only a few feet, resulting in a broken arm, has stopped me from climbing any higher than the second rung up a step-ladder.

    I heard on the news this morning that his wife was upset with him for holding the hand of a nurse ;)

    It is a remarkable story.

    I saw this as well. what a remarkable story. The reported said that window washers are instructed to “ride” a falling platform like they are surfing. I wonder if this is what he did?

    that’s out of control!!! My wife & I are watching Alias on DVD, so it’s making me second guess everything…maybe he was a CIA special agent, or a criminal…or it was a set up to make it look like something else…hum?????

    I always watch those guys with mixed feelings: fascination and terror. I could NEVER do that job.

    This story is amazing though, and for him to regain consciousness on Christmas Day…what a gift. But the part where he mistook the nurse for his wife…yeah, right. I know Latin men… ;

    Oh my god! That must be horrific to see yourself fall and not being able to do anything but wait for the impact.

    Glad they both made it. It’s just amazing!

    Wow that’s an amazing story. What’s more amazing is he would want to return to this type of work.

    I didn’t know about this. I guess some people like the thrill or have a death wish.

    Wow…my body aches just reading that. But more importantly…God obviously still has work for this man to do. I’m not sure it is window washing, though :)
