I’m Back.

After a week and a half away from blogging, I returned to find that I have nothing to write about! I haven’t really followed the news or current events as most of my leisure time was spent cooking, doing yard work and chauffeuring my son around. I also got a rather drastic haircut and a severe case of poison oak. Exciting, I know.

We did manage to find the time to rent several DVDs and saw a couple of movies on TV as well so I guess I’ll write about those:

  • Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story - We saw a trailer for this in the theater earlier this year and thought it looked funny. It was… the trailer that is.
  • Raiders of the Lost Ark - The kids had never seen any of the Indiana Jones movies. Almost three decades on, it’s still pretty good and I was really surprised at how good the special effects have held up.
  • There Will Be Blood - What is it with these Oscar nominated movies? I didn’t care much for this one. The narrative was disjointed and I thought Paul Dano’s performance was better than Daniel Day-Lewis’.
  • Alvin and The Chipmunks - Yep, the kids again. Cute, innocently silly, nice special effects and I’ve had that stupid “hula-hoop” song stuck in my head for three days.
  • Grand Theft Parsons - We caught the last 2/3 of this one on the IFC channel. I had wanted to see this since it first came out but never got around to it. I wish we’d seen the beginning but what we saw was quite good. It is an absolutely unbelievable plot though. Of course it’s based on a true story.
  • My Boy Jack - On PBS last night. This was a wonderful film adaptation of David Haig’s drama, starring Haig as Rudyard Kipling, Kim Cattrall as his wife Carrie and Daniel Radcliffe as their son John (Jack) who died in WWI after Kipling called in favors to get the nearly blind teen into the war.

It’s worth noting that the two movies we found most interesting were the two we saw on TV!

Well, that was my week in a nutshell. I plan on posting a bit less frequently for the next few weeks and I’ll spend the time in between catching up with everyone.

    Welcome back,
Your dreams were your ticket out.
    Welcome back,
To that same old place that you laughed about…

It’s about bloomin’ time! Missed you my friend!!!

Hubby watched There Will Be Blood and detested it. He said the movie score stunk out loud and that it was not worth the time it took to watch it. I came in on the very last scene, just in time to see someone get it with a bowling pin. So I’m not a fan either.

We rented and watched I am Legend. Seemed to be a pretty good knock off of The Stand and that “other” virus movie. Will Smith was as always Mm Mm good but I don’t like scary stuff.

Glad that you are back. All is well in Blogland! Going to say hi to Stacie.

Sorry to hear abotu the poison oak! Yikes!

I have not seen some of those films, and am interested to do so… although I LOVE the Indiana Jones films—classics!!!

  4. Scarlet Says:

I hate it when they show the funniest clips in the previews and everything else is lame in comparison. I guess that’s two thumbs down for the Dewey Cox story, huh?

We watched The Goonies w/ the kids a few weeks ago and they loved it. That was such a good movie!

I’m glad you had a relaxing week w/ your family and welcome back to Blog World.

Boy, I must be out of the loop or something because of all the movies you listed, I’ve only seen one. It was Raiders of the Lost Ark…and I didn’t care much for it. Hmmmmm…..perhaps it’s just my taste in movies that’s a bit off.

Any way…glad you had a good time away.

  6. Linda Says:

Welcome back. I love the “Indy” Movies, especially the last one. Sean Connery is so dang cute as his dad…ok…he is so dang cute anytime ;)

    Hey Art!

I found the past 6 months hard to write. I am taking a very very long break from it. I have been watching a lot of movies and reading books to take place of the writing I once did.

I’m glad you’re back. I’m still “reading” but just not writing. I hope you’re doing fantastic! :)

    God bless!

I tend to only watch movies that I have seen the preveiws for on other good movies, been burned to many times by picking one I haven’t seen.

  9. Stacie Says:

Totally right on! We’ll be staying away from all those “Oscar nominated” movies…what a bunch of hooey! I think my favorite of all we watched was the one with Harry Potty going off to WWI.. that was an excellent movie.

  10. Jason Dye Says:

judging a movie by its preview is like two plus six equals 9. it just don’t add up. (ok, that was lame. it’s late.)

i totally went to b-buster the other day with my baby to look for IJ&tAotC. all the copies of that movie were gone (and i really don’t care for the others, no matter HOW CUTE connery is). and i was wondering who took off with the last copy…

  11. Jason Dye Says:

o, and harry potter as the blind son of a famous british poet going off to war. that sounds like a classic.

  12. Nadine Says:

Welcome back Art. I loved your review of Walk Hard - too funny.

  13. Vicki Says:

    Funny.

Doc & I just don’t watch many movies. Of the ones you’ve listed above, I’ve only seen the Indy movies (I refuse to ever watch the second one again…ever!)

Sounds like a productive time off to me! I love Indiana Jones movies, and My Boy Jack sounds great. Of course I’m a PBS fanatic!

    Glad you’re back

  16. Zhu Says:

I didn’t like Walk Hard much either… I thought I would be better. But I liked There Will Be Blood… maybe you got disappointed because of the hype. I wasn’t sure what I was going to see when I saw it!
